James M. Mets, Esq.
James M. Mets, is a founding partner of Mets Schiro & McGovern, LLP. He concentrates his practice in representing both public and private sector unions, including numerous PBAs and SOAs, Teamsters, and the IAFF, in all aspects of labor management relations, including collective bargaining, interest arbitration, proceedings before the Public Employment Relations Commission (PERC), Department of Personnel, Police and Fire Retirement System Board (PFRS) and the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB), as well as litigation in State and Federal Courts.
Mr. Mets is an approved member of the State Policemen’s Benevolent Association (PBA) Legal Protection. He and the Firm represent officers in critical incidents, discipline, and Federal and State litigation. He was awarded a silver life card by the State PBA for his efforts on behalf of its membership.
Mr. Mets teaches labor relations in many different venues, including the State PBA Collective Bargaining Seminar (collective bargaining, interest arbitration, officers’ rights and PBA organizing), the NJ Institute for Continuing Legal Education (Police Discipline, Administrative Law, ADR and other courses relating to law enforcement and labor relations), the American Arbitration Association (Grievance Processing and Arbitration) and he is regularly invited as a guest lecturer at the prestigious Rutgers Union Leadership Academy and the National Labor Relations Board Annual Conference. In addition, he teaches many courses on labor relations and employee rights (including Internal Affairs and AG Guidelines, FMLA, ADA and LAD) for his Union clients.
Mr. Mets graduated magna cum laude from Montclair State College and received his J.D. from Rutgers School of Law in Newark, New Jersey, where he was awarded the Reitman Labor Law Scholarship.
Mr. Mets is admitted to practice law in the States of New Jersey and New York; Federal Courts (United States District Court for the Eastern District of New York, United States District Court for the Southern District of New York, United States District for the District of New Jersey, and the United States Third Circuit Court of Appeals). He is a member of the American Bar Association and the New Jersey Bar Association, Labor and Employment Section, where he served on the Editorial Board of the Labor and Employment Law Quarterly.
From 2005 through 2010, Mr. Mets has been named a New Jersey Super Lawyer by New Jersey Monthly Magazine. He was also selected to be included in The Best Lawyers in America in 2006 through 2010 and was named as one of the New York Area’s Top Lawyers by New York Magazine for the same time period. He is a former member of the Board of Trustees of the Make-A-Wish foundation of New Jersey.
